Most in the sector believe that directors should not receive any income, but should also not pay expenses associated with their service above and beyond their personal donations.
While board members do fall under the IRS prohibition on “self-dealing,” there is an exception made for “payment of compensation...for personal services,” which includes fees for board members.
The question of paying or not paying directors is a perennial nonprofit debate. In the early 2000s, there were several newspaper reports of huge payments for trustees and some interest by the Senate Finance Committee in limiting or even banning such compensation.
